Gastown Pubs (Vancouver BC) that I’ve worked with include: The Portside Pub. With an abundance of events every weekend, there was a high turn around rate for projects. I would mainly design media packages which included: posters, Instagram squares, Facebook cover photos, loyalty cards, and table talkers/tent cards.
Their brand revolves around a nautical theme which I brought forward with design elements such as ropes, maps, anchors, and more. My main focus with these media packages was the text hierarchy. Portside would always test my ability to completely shift my designs as they would begin with minimal content, only to have additional information added later on. While that can cause what feels like endless editing, it really helped me refine my skills in layout organization.
This was my first illustration project ever (scuba diver, pictured above). I had a great time exploring with different textures, playing with outlines, and colours. I thought it would be interesting and dynamic to incorporate the octopus tentacles surrounding the diver. Since illustration isn’t my specialty and they really wanted more customizable imagery for their future posters, they ended up hiring an illustrator (Jeffry Burgess). He was fantastic for the unique caricatural artwork that they were looking for and it was also interesting to collaborate with someone new. He would illustrate the focal image while I would finish the poster with the rest of the elements (logo, typography, etc.)
Near the Gastown Pubs, there was a very popular dinner spot called Chill Winston. I was given direction to design a business card-size handout that could be given to the restaurant’s waiting list.
I chose to represent neighbours with beach lawn chairs to keep with the nautical theme. I added a simplified map to the back so those that haven’t heard the pub before would realize how close they were to it. The drink specials were also highlighted on the front to bring some more interest.
This “Free Cover” card is intended to be distributed to the walking traffic. Ideally, they would hand this out earlier in the day before people have set plans to sway them into coming to The Portside Pub for the night.
If anyone knows Portside, you know that there tends to be a long line-up to get in, especially on weekends. Adding “Express Line” helps justify the decision to come out, to those who would be hesitant to wait in line.

Gastown Pubs (Vancouver BC) that I’ve worked with secondly, includes: The Blarney Stone – an Irish pub. My main projects for their company were the media packages which included: posters, Instagram squares, Facebook cover photos, website banners, table talkers/tent cards, etc. (give or take some variations dependent on specific events). Every once in a while there would be a different type of project such as a rack card or printed event tickets.
They didn’t have a single corporate colour but we stuck with green tones to satisfy their Irish theme. The consistency came across with the vintage/distressed textures that were used across the board.
I would be given the text details and any mandatory logos or elements and then brainstorm a way to make it work as a poster. Working with The Blarney Stone really helped me discover fun ways to play with text styles and hierarchy. Since their posters had different moods to represent different events, they could all be different. Although, they would remain recognizable in the common styles of: grunge, vintage, or with the added green.
I worked with Lonely Cloud Design as a contract designer. Our main clientele included: bars/pubs, realtors, and miscellaneous industries. My employer along with the marketing team at the Portside Pub would critique any drafts I came out with and we would collaborate on design decisions for me to finalize.
